Motion vs. Progress

January 13, 2007

Continuing my pursuit and realization of whollyness, I’ve been enamored lately with the idea of motion versus progress. The catalyst was a quote by Alfred A. Montapert, Do not confuse motion and progress. A rocking horse keeps moving, but does not make any progress.” I tried to find a biography for Mr. Montapert…nothing but his books and famous quotes. Seems like this phenomenal thinker had a grasp on his Divine purpose — inspire and invoke thought in the world through simple, yet profound statements. (If anyone has biographical info on him, please drop me a line.)

Every person on this planet has Divine purpose. That ‘thing’ that God foresaw in and about us. That ‘it’ upon which our life depends, and once complete, (in no hurry, but) you can transcend to death without a hole of unfulfillment in your soul.

God, let me not be in hot pursuit of my purpose aboard a rocking horse…waving my cowboy hat and spanking the horse on the rear — Ugh! Give me wisdom not to exert my energy just going through alot of motions, but getting no where. This level of foolishness shall not be found in me. Ashe.Selah

After a few quick successes, I have to fight the fizzle that attacks my drive. It takes greater energy not only to keep moving forward after a good distance, but to resist the other two options — standing still, and moving backwards from where I’ve come. I must fight the “weary in well doing”, and maintain focus on the ultimate goal of reaping my harvest. I cannot simply plant the seeds and walk away after seeing a few buds. No. I must water regularly, protect from rodents…I must extract the WEEDs (Whatever Emerges to Eradicate my Destiny) often because my harvest is rich in beauty, truth, and substance to feed a generation.

So, as the nation prepares to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, I take a moment in my blog to honor him — not for being just a dreamer, but one who used the wings of forward progress to give the dream flight…One who didn’t stop after a few successful rallies, or a few hundred voter’s registration cards….One who understood the greatness of his purpose and dream would not be fully revealed in his lifetime, but in the lives of others. Thank you for the example. I’ve got dreams too, but that’s not the end of the story. Dreams + Action(Progress) = Purpose.

If you can’t fly, then run.
If you can’t run, then walk.
If you can’t walk, then crawl.
But whatever you do, keep moving.

– Dr. Martin Luther King

  2. […] Moving forward is not always a walk in the park. Sometimes we bruise our little pinky toe…sometimes we fall flat on our face. It’s OK. It will always be better to fall INTO the Light, than out of it. […]
